A picture of the railway bridge on Chorley Road. Courtesy of Ruth Meadows of Rectory Lane who's husband Frank took the picture just before it's demolition in 1984. So that people could remember what the bridge looked like.

Where was this bridge? What line did it carry?

It was at the bottom of the hill, going from Boars Head to Chorley just after the row of semi houses end, about 400 yds from the London /Glasgow line.It was I think the Whelley loop,it branched off behind the Boars Head signal box.

This bridge carried the Wigan Avoiding Line (Whelley Loop)
which ran from Bamfurlong Sorting Sidings through to Standish Junction on the West Coast Line.
The Boars Head Line was a separate line which ran from
Boars Head box through Red Rock to White Bear and then to Adlington.
