This photo was taken in August 1949. Garswood Recreation Park or "Garswood Rec." as it was known locally was the nearest children's park to Downall Green, a walk of nearly a mile.

What happy memories. We would cross the field on the foot path from Birch Grove to Billinge rd. Then walk along Smock Alley and we were there. Great times.

Brilliant photo Lyndon. I remember the trek from Downall Green John, with our jam butties and a bottle of water we'd be on the 'rec' all day during the Summer holidays. It always seemed to be lovely warm days then, quite change from nowadays. What great memories!! Thanks for sharing this photo.

did we ever find out why the houses were knocked down in the background of this photo ?

Comment by: ged on 14th February 2018 at 15:40

Ian. the houses you refere to were knocked down due to being unfit to live in , you will remember they were stone cottages built by the estate of Lord Gerard for his employees, Thy worked over the road where Garswood Labour Club is now, there were more cottages close to Lord Gerards Stables, I remember them beind knocked down sometime during the war, They were refered to as The Stable Houses,
