The stonework you are looking at is a later addition to form a wharf. Originally a lock would have been found where the stonework is to allow onward passage along the Douglas Navigation. Upon closure of the Navigation the lock between the canal and the river was kept in operation and the previous lock basin turned into a wharf hence the blockwork.
