There is something about the old Wigan Corporation buses that brings on waves of nostalgia for a time past. You could go along way for a penny halfpenny once upon a time.

I used to go to & from school from SLG to Springfield for a ½d each way.
what I remember most was, it could be dark, raining, freezing, but when you saw those two green lights coming towards you, you knew you were on the way home in a warm bus

even the buses were clean in those days to say nothing of the streets

It used to cost me 2d.from Ince Bar to the Bird, then a walk down Lord Street to get to Hindley and Abram. If it was raining at home time,I could get L U T bus outside school to Market Street for a penny, then catch the 'corpy' bus to Ince.AND we had conductors !AND we stood up iF there were any adults without seats, thanks to mum's training.

Immediately to the right of the bus is Walter Hurst's clog shop. To the right of Hurst's was the chemists shop - was it run by a Mr Jones?

I could well have been on that bus on my way home to Broadway on Castle Hill Estate! I was 17 then and in the sixth form at Hindley and Abram.

this was the only bus i knew the number of, i used to get on it in front of the shop in market st that used to be a drapers store, think it was army and navy store, where nationwide now is and go to wigan aged about 14

Comment by: I Caldwell on 14th October 2012 at 09:39

Would the drapers store further up Market Street be Frank Whittles (if you want to get ahead get a hat) or was it further up near Mill Turning.
From the number on this bus it must be post Gmet Transport because of the bus number Wigan Corp buses were 3 or 3A
