1978 and Boxing Day and what a beauty it was. Stiff frost after a fair bit of cold and dazzlingly blue. With an inch or more of ice there was no chance of wetting a line so I took the camera instead. In those days it was a Halina 35 - a boy's camera bought for me by my Grandad when I was eight - and it shows.
This corner of the park lake was the swings corner but there was always the remains of some sort of iron gate now partly in the water. I have also noticed that on the railway side of the lake where the bank is cinder there is a submerged stone edging about four feet out and a foot deep. I am thinking that the level has risen since the days when, perhaps, this was a much more ornamental type of park lake.
It's always been a favourite place.

This pond was the home of the much feared "Percy" the pike, a giant by all accounts and known to come from the depths like a torpedo to take the odd duck or two.I think he must have lived a good long life as every generation knew of the legend named "Percy the pike".

I've heard tales of Percy Joseph but I've never met him. Pike's not my strong point. I've been fishing forty years and fish are not my strong point. Catching nowt and enjoying it is my strong point. Boy have I suffered on this lake!!
