When I was a child me and my pals used to think this statue was fantastic, really life-like.
its about time he was returned to his stone. why was it taken down in the first place
let him stay were he belong in the park. he is a lot better then the ones there putting up around wigan like the one in ince park a wastof money
This memorial to Wigan's finest should be restored to its original state and to this place of prominence where it can be seen from just about anywhere in the park.
Otherwise, the 'lest we forget' claim is just humbug.
It's a disgrace that Wigan Council took this statue down and dumped it. It was there as a memorial to the war dead, not to glorify war as some of the 'PC'people would have us believe.
Graham,
Would you have any further information as to where the memorial was dumped by the council?
Sculptor was John William Gascombe and the Memorial was unveiled on 4th February 1903.Vandals gradually destroyed the monument and it was removed leaving only the large piece of granite on which the statue stood.
With the railings taken for scrap in WW2 it was easy for the vandals. There are moves afoot with The Friends of the Boer War Memorial to have a statue reinstated but money is the problem. Lottery money allocated for Mesnes Park apparently cannot be used for this statue. The original was paid for by Public subsciption. The Friends etc, had a meeting on Mon,29 March2010 but I could not attend. E.T.
I recently found out that This statue was unveiled in 1903 by my great - great grandfather, who was at the time Deputy Mayor of Wigan, William Lowe.
this statue was burried in the grounds in park so its still there someone knows where it was not destroyed , its still in tacked so please dig it up and put it back
The old statue was much nicer than the 'motionless' one they have put there now - it looks like a chess piece. Dan - I think I could be related to William Lowe - can you tell us where he came from?
