View of Hope St on a wet day, showing CONROY's fruit merchants. PARK HOTEL. HOPE ST CHURCH and the good old SAVOY chippie.Where I spent most of my school dinner money. Pudding Chips and Peas two slices of bread and butter and a cup of tea. for 9d.... Thanks to my mate pinching a book of receipts which we filled in as 9d, which was the cost of chips and gravy. Happy days

Did you sit upstairs or down at the Savoy Ron and I can still remember their square fish which was delicious.A few of us from The Linacre dined there every day despite myself being entitled to free school meals. We new what was good for us.Thanks a million for bringing back such good memories.

We sat upstairs on the third floor if possible. My friend, although in retrospect it may have been me<g>. pinched a receipt book as used by the waitresses. When you had finished your meal the waitress would ask you what you had eaten and put the total cost down on a receipt. We would then substitue that recipet for "One we had made earlier" showing 9d. Which was the cost of the cheapest thing on the menu i.e. chips and gravy. As you were going out you had to pass the till which was at the end of the counter were you paid. No sneaking out, but they didn't know about our scam L.O.L.
If anyone reading this, once owned the SAVOY, and is now bankrupt!! I'm sorry.....

Hello again Ron,you've brought back all the small details of dining at The Savoy. Those waitresses put up with us in a very good natured way if I remember right.

I think two sisters - Elsie and Rita worked there in the 60s.
