A map dated 1840 to 1890 showing Millgate. I’ve numbered and named the pubs. Millgate continued and two more pubs were listed but I could not fit them on this extract, they were “Waggon and Horses” and “Horse Shoe Inn” (on the same side as the Mitre Inn.)
1 RING O’ BELLS
2 SHIP INN
3 CROWN INN (although I suppose this could be in the Wiend)
4 ALBION INN
5 WOOLPACK INN
6 MITRE HOTEL

Thankyou Keith. The numbering is very helpful makes all the difference when trying to locate places.

Seems like there’s always been a lot of pubs in Wigan near the centre.

lots of pubs, when men were men and clog fights settled disputes

Keith,Bath Hotel Millgate . was it the Mitre Hotel or different pub built later than 1890s ?

I’m sorry AH but I do not know the answer. Perhaps, as you suggest it might have been re-built, or more likely undergone a name change, who knows?

The Mitre was demolished in 1889 and the Bath Hotel was built on the same site. An old pit shaft had opened in the floor of the old pub according to the Observer.
