Ron’s 1902 photo of the Old Dog Inn was posted some 14 years or so ago, I’ve simply enhanced and coloured it. My more recently posted photo showing the side entrance, I think, reveals that the Old Dog was probably re-built (judging by the brickwork) before being demolished yet again in the 70’s? Looking at the Census for 1901 shows that the hidden part of the sign says Hannah Jolley (nee Gill). Here’s the listing from 1901. She’s a widow whose husband was Gilbert Jolley, born in Wigan in 1856 but died in 1896 aged just 41, while living at the pub.
1901 Census All Saints Ward - Market Place, Old Dog Inn - Hannah Jolley, 40, Widow, Licensed Victualler Born Tavistock, Devon. Everyone else was born in Wigan. They were, Elizabeth Jolley, daughter 19, Barmaid, Gilbert Jolley, son 12, Annie Jolley 9, Elizabeth Smith 27, General Servant Domestic.

If this was the old, Old Dog I wonder if there was another previous one or would this one be the one when Bonnie Prince Charlie passed through Wigan.

It must have been a tribute then Ron to the Dog Inn… keeping the name going. ;>))

Veronica The DOG INN was on the opposite side of the road. You can make out the sign on an early image of the Market Place. Somewhere on the site?

In 1797 two pubs were listed as The Dog - one where John Moore was the tenant and the other was James Roper's pub. The Old Dog originally had its own brewery but was taken over by Oldfields before 1872, becoming a Walkers pub in 1926. The Old Dog Music Hall was attached from the 1880s to the 1910s. Gilbert Jolley became the licensee around 1892 and his wife Hannah ran it until at least 1914
