Another great picture Ron.
I agree John, another great picture by Ron.
Although I don't remember the old Pendlebury's Store looking quite so grand with those colonnades at the time it was burned down around 1954.
I think that 'Boot & Shoe Warehouse' on the right must have been demolished to make way for the widening of Crompton Street?
In the background on the left behind the lamp post I think that that three storey building might have been a bank?
On the left where as you say Mesnes Street would be cut through and all those fine buildings where constructed, design by George Heaton, that three or for storey building was The Tea Warehouse of Richard Makinson from Blackrod who financed much of the reshaping and rebuilding building of Wigan Town Centre including Mesnes Street and Makinson's Arcade.
I posted a picture on PAD 29th July 2024 of what must be the remnants of that building still on the corner with the Royal Arcade at the side.
It just shows that that Wigan and its buildings have evolved many times over the years and as we are experiencing at the moment, will continue to do so. For better or worse is not for me to judge, it's just a fact.
It's easy to picture this today, the horse and cart is now replaced by JustEat bikes, and the fellas crossing the road have just pinched another bottle of booze from B&M.....
