Fascinating, Ron! I've only just realised that Syd and Eddie are "Little and Large". Didn't the well-known Wiganer Billy Davies work at The ABC, (Ritz), in those days?
Used to see SYD and EDDIE regular at the Sportsman Club along with CANNON and BALL It seems they were on every few weeks. Best comedian was JOHNNY GOON TWEED He never made the BIG TIME but every time I saw him he had me crying with laughter. Great times..
Those were the days my friend, (remember Marian Faithfull ?) when pop music made you happy, not like the mournful dirges that they 'sing' today
Apologies for correcting you Helen ‘my friend ‘ but ‘Those were the days’ was by Mary Hopkins 1969. Although I see that you did ? this.
All the ‘Stars’ went to the Ritz but Tom Jones went to the Emp and I and a few girls from work went to see him there in ‘68 I think. I’ve only seen 2 ‘ Stars’ Freddie Starr on his way up before he tumbled down! He was at the Garrick in Leigh he was brilliant then. What a talent for mimicry.
i think tom jones did appear at the ritz replaced pj proby after he split his pants at an earlier venue ?
He may well have done AH but I saw him at the Emp. It seemed the Ritz wasn’t big enough at the time…
AH....Wasn't it P J Proby who split his pants??
Of course you are quite right Colin, Mary Hopkins. Where is she now I wonder...& it is still a great song even if I only sing it in my head !
i will repeat. pj proby split his pants at an earlier venue. tom jones replaced him at the ritz do you understand irene
Yes AH....and my apologies to you; I had mis-read your first comment.
No problem Irene: I have misunderstood comments on here and been corrected
Marrian Faithfuls big hit was "As tears go by". I remember the Garrick in Leigh. I used to work at the High Jump Club, if you remember that. I was compare and DJ for 7 years. Worked with great acts before they were "hot". Little and large, cannon and ball, Jimmy Cricket, and a few of the Comedians off the TV series. Happy days indeed
