Described as Ince Hall Colliery, Wigan 1893. These children of miners were gathered to be fed. The large tent housed food preparation staff and equipment. This photo was published in the Illustrated London News and the location was given as possibly on the south side of Darlington Street, which from the map, I would place in the grounds of the Gas Works. I speculate that it may have been a location nearer the Colliery and the location may have been off Warrington Lane Just a guess.

If anyone out there looking at this photo thinks they are hard done by.....take another look .
The song by Ralph Mctell comes to mind.

I have seen this photo before and think it was captioned as Hope Street, Spring View, Ince, soup kitchen

Thank you Brendell for that possible location. Looking at the map it makes sense with Spring View School being so close by, just over the way, close by Warrington Lane. My supposition might not be too far from the mark. There was also spare land where this location might have been, adjacent to Hope Street.

The reason this photo stayed in my mind is that it is possible that I have ancestors who were children at the time and lived in the area. Terrible times

Correction - apologies, of course I meant Warrington Road, not Lane.

Helen that is a beautiful song and so thought provoking.

Yes, didn't Ralph Mctell's great grandad sing Streets of Ince in Makerfield?

Folk might have been impoverished in those days but they certainly had a lot of children. I can’t recall seeing so many in one place.
