How is the name pronounced Ron ?
Bamferlong, one long word or Bam'fir'long, I cant remember !
Nice old house, bit of the old black & white of Lancashire.
Ron, there is an article issued in a newsletter of the Wigan Archealogical Society. It seems Bamferlong Hall went in some road works, only the grounds were outside the area of activity. There is a Bamferlong Hall Farm in Lily Lane apparently.
Helen, the accent is on the "BAM", and then "fur" and "long" are short and both syllables are the same length , NOT as in the "furlong", (the measurement). Not easy to explain in words... think of DUM-di-dum! And MAR-zi- pan! Best I can do! xxxxx
Just noticed the two figures, one wearing a cappello romano like hat and long coat, like how priests used to wear, and the other looking like a young boy, they're to the right of the left hand door and the boy almost behind the tree.
Annette Walton and her family lived at Bamfurlong Hall Farm when we were at HAGS from 1962-67. I can remember going potato-picking there in the school hols.
Got it now Irene !
Looking at this picture and others of the many halls and manor houses around the Borough that have been lost or demolished even in my life time is very sad.
By coincidence yesterday I came from Ashton through Stubshaw Cross Bamfurlong and Platt Bridge (having got on the wrong bus to Wigan!) and was amazed how many green fields are still there and how elevated it was. There was a clear view all over Rivington and I could see Haigh Hall (Still in its wrappings) poking through the trees.
Colin, I live in Abram and use the 320 bus to and from Ashton. which will be the one you caught. I know the spot where the bus passes on the way to Platt Bridge from where you get a fantastic view all over Rivington, and when there is snow on the ground up at Rivington it creates a bit of an optical illusion, and you feel you could walk it there in a few minutes.
