Great photo. The name was spelt wrong from its inception and still is as it should read Walmesley.
Known locally as Ince Park to many, the park was immaculate and very well kept by Ince Council. Gates locked each evening by the Park keeper.
I started work as an apprentice gardener at Walmesley Park in July 1962.
Then it was a lovely formal park with annual flower beds rose beds and shrub borders. It also had a fine bowling green four tennis courts and a putting green.
All the annual bedding was grown from seed each year in the greenhouses and heated and cold frames. It was a lovely park untill April 1974 then local government reorganisation happens and Wigan Metropolitan Borough took over. The metro also took over all other district parks and slowly the site based men were moved out of parks and pride of most parks left with them. Now they are left with very little horticultural beauty andhardly any funding. A crying shame.
