Photo and description from Colin Traynor.
My family purchased a grandfather clock in 1965 when we were living in Essex, England. The clock was made by Coats (es?) of Wigan. It was rather an old clock and worked - but the "gong" of the clock was so loud we had to not run the clock - it kept us awake at night! My brother now has the clock.
Thanks for posting this Keith.
This was one of quite few photo's of interesting artifacts and memorabilia some kept in storage brought out for me to photograph by the Manager, Jason.
When my granddaughter was a baby she had a cd player in her bedroom with a cd of children's songs on and her parents used to have it on very low to lull her to sleep. The first song was about a clock and the first line was "My face was made in Wigan" and we were always puzzled by it and wondered if we were hearing it correctly until a friend told me that Wigan had once been a clock-making town.
