I think it was better with the railings in front of the pond. I must have leant on those railings many a time. The park was very well cared for in those days.
Have those railings gone Veronica?
I know I haven't been past there in quite a while, but it goes to show that things that are usually there can become a usual part of the background and be unseen, maybe the snowflakes thought that young children would stick their head through the iron circles and get it stuck.
One time I went in with my grandson a good few years ago and numerous ducks, swans and pigeons were on the path. He wouldn’t go past them as there was so many. He was only 3 though! I have walked in the park since and it seems strange not having the railings there. I wonder why they were removed.
Veronica, here's some information about the park from the internet, obviously you like others will already know a lot of it, though there are some parts that I did find interesting, also what is new to me I've never known or heard tell about Carp being in the pond, (in walk around Mesnes park).

No mention of these particular railings though, quite possibly they had became so badly corroded that they'd been taken down through safety fears of them falling down, or worse still - someone leaning on them and ending up in the pond.
Great picture Ron.
Spent many happy hours here feeding the ducks after shopping in wigan with my mum.
