The other evening whilst "rooting" through some of my photo's etc I came across this postcard from my elder sister dated 22-07-1974 to me. She and her family had come down from Milngavie (outside Glasgow) for a week staying with my Father in Standish. At that time my wife & I were living in Scotland. What did surprise me was the card was published by "Smith's, Booksellers, 49 Mesnes Street Wigan. Looking at some of the postcard photo's posted in this section of the album I wonder whether they were produced by Smiths? What I like about the montage is the beauty and tidiness of the park as I used to remember in the 60's & early 70's.
Whilst growing up in Wigan during the 1930's my parents often took my 2 sisters into the park for play and walks as, at that time, they lived close by in Swinley. Both my sisters passed away last year eight months apart. (90 & 86 years old)

Who remembers, in the summer there was always at one time, a functioning flower clock on the grassed slope to the left of the steps going up tp the the park cafe and down towards the duck pond?

Parks that look like Menses Park did some years ago still have a place. Nice, neat & orderly with their flower beds & stripes in the grass. There are many Country parks to visit these days if you want to walk on the wild side !
Thanks for the memory Derekb

Apologies Barrie....it was actually you ' rooting around in old photos ' & not Derek !
Blame it on the clocks and the start of British Summertime !!

Gareth, I've always known it as Mesnes Park and according to a 1914 book of my Father's entitled "Wigan Town and Country Rambles" by John T.Hilton who gives a description entitled Mesnes Park -'This park and lung of the town lies in Mesnes beyond the Grammar School. Opened in 1878 on the site of the old Mesnes and the marl pits".
WN1 thanks for your comment. It brings home that we are also getting old as we reminisce our growing up in Wigan and surrounding districts.

Gareth, it's Mesnes Park, Wigan to avoid confusion with Mesnes Park, Newton le Willows.
