This area may well have been levelled even before the Alexandre opencast operations in the mid 1980s .
I may possibly have mis-spelt Alexandre an’ all .
… I usually do .
Ozy, your spelling and grammar are always spot-on! I love allotments....I think they have such character with higgledy-piggledy knocked-together sheds and a mixture of flowers and vegetables. I like the "make-do-an-mend" look about them, with old tyres and buckets being utilised rather than "perfect" gardens with striped lawns and regimented flower-beds. We step straight out of the living-room onto the pavement at our house, as you know, and have only a back-yard at the rear, so I have never had a garden but I love to look at other people's gardens and particularly allotments.
You’ve probably experienced this yourself Irene . But on this site , on occasions , I find it difficult to type a post using correct punctuation , as the comma , full stop , speech mark , or whatever , often appears on the next row of text , and I find that bloody frustrating .
This is the primary reason why I often split my text into individual paragraphs .
On this particular occasion however , I think the correct spelling should have been Alexandra .
The photo looks over the allotments to the rear of Aspull St John's School and St John's Church Tower can be seen in the background. Also, the chimney of Haigh Saw Mill can be seen.
I think you're right Ozy, but only because I have a friend who is interested in the local mines and I think I have heard him mention The Alexandra Pit.
