I didn’t recognise it ..
But others probably will …Edna?
My Dad always pronounced this "Catharyne Street", rather than "Catherin Street", and for some reason he always pronounced St. Catherine's Church as "St. Catterns". As he was from Spring View originally and lived in Ince from 1930, I have no idea why, as we had no connection with Scholes! These are wonderful photos, Veronica. Thankyou.
I recall the bars in front of St Catharine’s school.
Those houses on Scholefield Lane are familiar. There were quite a few shops including Carney’s Chip shop out of the picture on the left side.
I'd picked this pic out for the interest in it - not the location - but the lamp-man who looks like Charlie Chaplin up that precarious-looking ladder.
My Grandad always called the Church Saint Cattern's He was from Haigh originally and then moved to Scholes.
Irene, my father was from Scholes and he too called the school and the church Catterns, he and his family belonged to St Pat's, but I I'm sure that was the name that a lot of folks referred to the church and school.
I remember reading an article that went into great detail about a right old palaver when the street or church name began to be spelled with an 'a' rather then an e, and it was the church as I've found this by way of some explanation:

I wouldn't have liked to have gone up in one of those cherry picker hoists they now use, never mind going up that ladder, maybe the man up the ladder should be wearing the arrow mans mac and beret, shouting oooh Betty.
As an old boy of both church and school,I can confirm that my grandmother' s generation(1860=1947) always called them Catterns
But the a relation of mine,Catherine Underwood, appears in the 1861 Census as Cattern. It was just odd Lanky speyk
Veronica. Carneys chip shop was in the row of shops on Scholefield Lane immediately behind where the photographer was standing on the other side of Catherine Street. From memory there was a sweet shop and then Carneys.
Thanks Carolean. You are right it took me a while to find my bearings.
Carolaen if you look on Street Scenes then Scholefield Lane you will see the Carneys and the toffee shop the man sat down enjoying his pipe is Dick Eatock his shop i lived in Linney Street
