Note to Maureen....you asked on the last photo what the man with the pointy stick and numbered board was doing. He was taking measurements for the Ordnance Survey Map. I have one showing him near my childhood home in Ince as the screensaver on my computer. They are fascinating. Didn't you live in Great George Street in Wigan? I'm sure Ozy could find a picture of the man in that area.

Yes I was brought up in Great George Street Irene but if I'm not mistaken someone else was asking what the man was doing ..I did see the bottom of Great George Street photo. Irene.

For anyone interested in St Joseph's, if you go on u tube and type in last Mass at St Joseph's Wigan . It quite fascinating.

Definitely Caroline Street. The Vine Inn on the right hand side, St Josephs Church just beyond and the Ropemakers Arms further on, with Wallgate in view at the end. Of the buildings in the photo, only St Josephs and possibly the shop at the end on the right which was up till recently a music shop remain. All the others gone.

WN1 Standisher. where the Vine pub is located , is this where the Veterinary surgery is now.

Arthur, I think it would have been on the junction of Chapel Street. There is a vets on the Wallgate side and a furniture shop on the other.
