There is a similar photo on the Album Veronica, and it's of Market Place before the buildings were demolished to make way for Library Street. https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/album/photo.php?opt=5&id=33326&gallery=Market+Place%2C+Wigan&page=48

I can't quite remember the street but..the shop on the right could be where Iceland is now..I know there used to be shops in that area as a relative of mine owned a hat shop in the middle of the photo.

Veronica, could that low building with the flat roof be Dunne's Menswear Shop that was on photo-a-day the other day? As Cyril says, they demolished some buildings to make way for Library Street, so the building to the right of the low-roofed building could be The Moon Under Water, and the large building next to it may have been where Library Street is now. Just a thought.

Yes it does look similar to a photo posted by Ron in 2007..Irene item 4180.

The Market Place before Library Street was built.

I think it might be at the top of Market Street taken from the Market Place with the volume of the Town Hall on the right. This would be before Lowe’ was built and the two buildings where pubs or hotels.
Might still have been referred to as Hallgate if Market Street had yet to be built,

Don't know where volume came from, it was meant to say 'columns' of the old Town Hall.

The top of Wallgate before some of those shops were demolished to make way for the top of Library Street. The building that became the Moon under Water would be to the left of this picture.

I am beginning to think you are all correct. Those columns to the right could be the Moot Hall before it was rebuilt in 1884.
