I don’t remember Mock Tudor or the big building at the bottom end or the car park. A friend has sent me this cutting. It does look familiar but Iam not convinced..I do remember Knights chemist on the corner though.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 25th February 2024 at 12:50

No Scholes Cinmea ? The road sign only shows a left turn and straight on. No right turn shown? The buildings in the background don't appear familiar either? I don't think it is Scholes? Tom will tell us..

Comment by: Veronica on 25th February 2024 at 13:04

I thought as much Ron…
But Scholes Pictures would have been behind the photographer. And the Bluebell pub would have been at the end on the right. I wonder which newspaper this would have been in.!! I do remember Union St coming out onto Scholes though…Pie Joes was on the corner of it. There was also an Ironmongers next to the Chemist which always had goods outside.. Thank you Ron it has baffled me. But it would be nice to know where it is …even so.

Comment by: Anne on 25th February 2024 at 13:05

Looks very much like Scholes to me. There’s Knights’ chemist on the corner of Lower Morris street on the left as well as Cunliffes - a printers I think and then Norcliffes next door but one.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 25th February 2024 at 13:11

I didn't know Scholes well enough for the photo to ring a bell with me but it will be interesting to see what people who lived in Scholes think. Come on, Tom Walsh, what do YOU think? It's certainly a fascinating photo of times gone by, wherever it is, even down to the "VP Wine" advert on the chemist's window. I have had the magnifying glass on those road signs to the left of the photo to try to see if they name local roads, such as A49, A573 etc but they are too blurred to make out the lettering.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 25th February 2024 at 14:42

I've checked this image against another image of this area and It is definitely Scholes The King Edward Lodging House on both images have the same window configuration..

Comment by: Veronica on 25th February 2024 at 15:44

I don’t recollect a car park down there though. The large building I thought was a lodging house was on the next block opposite the little
‘ rock garden’ surrounded by railings which is still there. Lower Morris St is on the right Anne. I don’t remember Mock Tudor in the fifties. The shop next to Knights was called Adam’s you could buy anything in there from pegs to clothes lines and buckets and mops. The Bluebell pub is well hidden if it is down there.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th February 2024 at 16:04

Well I have enlarged it and can see vaguely traffic lights and the big chimneys could be on the Bluebell pub at the end. It’s as if the camera has brought the large building in the distance closer! Still there’s the car park….i definitely don’t recall that or the ‘mock Tudor’ which could have been stripped off. I hope it is Scholes . Another one to ponder over…

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 25th February 2024 at 16:13

Veronica, I wonder if "Adams's" was the same firm as the "Adams's" which was a stall in The old Market Hall which was there until the closure of the hall in 1987? It was a lovely stall, selling buckets, pegs, shovels, dusters, polish etc. and even donkey-stones and dolly-blues. It was a lovely stall.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th February 2024 at 16:54

Could have been Irene. I used to buy something from Adam’s shop every week for my bottom drawer. I loved going in that shop as you say they sold everything . I liked the smell of it when you went in and it was wooden floorboards underneath your feet. Plus it was cheaper than going to the big stores in town.

Comment by: DerekB on 25th February 2024 at 17:30

The big building on the right is on the other side of the traffic lights. Can't remember the name of the business operating put of it. Immediately before it was a newsagents shop and the area where the car park is shown was also fronted with premises up to the street which ran alongside the river Douglas through to Warrington Road.

Comment by: tom on 25th February 2024 at 18:49

the top half looks like scholes the bottom half of the photo is nothing like scholes the background is somewere else think this photo has been altered

Comment by: Veronica on 25th February 2024 at 19:59

Derek B I think the big building was a sewing place at one time. Also when I enlarged the photo there seems to be a faint outline of the Parish Church in the distance. There’s also a very large building on the right - I don’t know what that is.

Comment by: Edna on 25th February 2024 at 22:43

It's Definitely Scholes, my sister in law worked in Knights Chemist. I remember walking down that hill. Also across the road was the chemist were you could get hot vimto.

Comment by: Thomas(Tom)Walsh. on 26th February 2024 at 00:27

The shop on the the left was "Pie Joes " . Veronica Adams Stores was the same firm as the one in the Market Hall, the manageress I think her name was Miss Standish , she always wore a beret .she traveled from Southport by train everyday . The shop next to Pie Jose was a Fish and Chip Shop , latterly it was run by Mrs Wong wife of the gentleman who ran the Chinese Laundry. Their children attended St Patricks School.

Comment by: Veronica on 26th February 2024 at 08:01

I’d forgotten the Wongs ran a chip shop as well as the Chinese Laundry. I can see her ( the mum) now behind the counter. It’s odd how the photographer has caught the distance so much nearer…it’s like a ‘mirage’. The car park has really baffled me. It must be the start of the demolition in the sixties Tom that’s why there are cars parked down there. There was a row of shops that have vanished.. The photo is not as old as it seems.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 26th February 2024 at 09:39

It is Scholes, further down would be the junction of School Lane on the right with The Blue Bell on the corner and Hanna and Teddy Livesey's shop a little further back and Warrington Lane on the left.
Further down still, on the right is the factory and the Shovel & Broom, the houses lower down had been demolished along Derby Terrace which ran along side the River Douglas, at that time used as a car park before Derby House flats were built.
Everything in this view was soon to be demolished and lost forever.

Comment by: Veronica on 26th February 2024 at 12:11

There was a row of shops in front of the car park which have been demolished by the time the photo was taken. I recall one was a jeweller’s cum watchmakers or at least sold clocks and watches.

Comment by: DerekB on 26th February 2024 at 18:42

Next to Wongs Chinese laundry was a herbalist's shop where, as kids {if we could afford it}, we used to go for a glass of sasparilla after coming out of Scholes pictures

Comment by: RON HUNT on 26th February 2024 at 20:47

Derek was it BOLTONS?

Comment by: Veronica on 26th February 2024 at 22:47

Don’t forget Cusani’s Fruit and Veg shop a bit further down and the Rag shop across the road.

Comment by: Philip Cunliffe on 27th February 2024 at 07:17

At the back of the car park there appears to be a wall with railings along the top. Would that wall be alongside the Douglas?

Comment by: Veronica on 27th February 2024 at 09:00

Definitely the wall along the Douglas. It’s still there to this day although not as ‘open’ it’s very overgrown with trees. It’s marvellous how open ground becomes overtaken with cars.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 27th February 2024 at 10:48

Philip, the row of railings is on this side of the river Douglas along what was Derby Terrace.
Veronica, The row of shops was on the other side of the River Douglas.
At the time when the railway bridge was still there the shops where on this side between the railway bridge and the river Douglas There was a Newsagents which the Bradshaw's had and a Hairdressers. I think the entrance to Palatines was also on this side of the bridge.
The Jewellers was Davenports and they did sell clocks and watches, that though was on the other side of the railway bridge lower down than the Horseshoe Pub.
So being on the other side of the Douglas all of these properties were effectively in Millgate, not Scholes.
Derek / Ron, the herbalists was Boltons, they did sell Sarsaparilla and Root Beer. Close by was The Fleece Pub.
I thought Wong's Chinese Laundry was on the opposite side further up Scholes?
The building behind the trees on the other side of the Douglas looks to be the roof The Children's Library on Station Road.
I think the larger building is College Avenue gable end of the upper level of The Mining and Technical College on Library Street, now The Town Hall.

Comment by: Veronica on 27th February 2024 at 14:49

Wong’s Laundry was on the left side going down out of the photo I think.
Before Bolton’s Herbalist. I had to take my dad’s loose collars there and go for them every Saturday. They were stiff white collars that were attached to buttons on the shirts.
( or vice versa).

Comment by: DerekB on 27th February 2024 at 18:43

Colin/Veronica. Wongs was on the left hand side going down Scholes. Colin, you are correct about Palatines being on the Scholes side of the railway bridge (I had completely forgotten about it until you mentioned it}

Comment by: Peter Walsh on 28th February 2024 at 08:05

There looks to be a Rover 90 on the land where the Shovel and Broom was, so perhaps mid fifties photo.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 28th February 2024 at 13:56

With an educated guess I would say this was around 1962. Douglas House would have been built but not on the picture, Derby House was built in the land where the cars are parked. Its a great picture of many long lost buildings and communities, like Darlington Street.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 29th February 2024 at 08:12

Derelict, nothing like being proved Wong Derek!

Comment by: Veronica on 29th February 2024 at 09:13

Jolly Roger has already smuggled this onto Wigan Nostalgia.
I have another rare photo of King St. A friend has sent it to me but I know it will be lifted. There should be a way of stopping a photo being lifted.
I had to laugh because he said the same as me “ not sure if this is Scholes!” They are all guessing now…

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 29th February 2024 at 11:07

Veronica, Jolley Roger should get a life and source his own stuff.
Not sure what can be done about it, I suppose he only has to take a screen shot of the picture.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 29th February 2024 at 11:14

Veronica, I never go on Facebook, but if you do, put a comment on that people should switch to Wigan World for more informative information and dump this pirate.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th February 2024 at 11:42

If you say anything Colin you would just get banned. I think Irene was stopped from commenting for something. I did say
“ That’s my photo I posted on WW - a thank you wouldn’t go amiss!” But nothing was said.

Comment by: Scaramouche on 29th February 2024 at 12:35

Veronica does he ever put images on his site, which he has taken from wiganworld, with the wiganworld watermark on?

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 29th February 2024 at 12:42

I wasn't stopped from commenting but Jolly Roger began telling me on what dates I could post a comment! Besides pinching photos off The Album on the same day they were added, he didn't like to be contradicted on anything. I would never comment on wrong spellings or grammar because it isn't everyone's strong point, as adding up isn't mine, but some people pointed out spelling mistakes to him and he took the huff! He once put on a photo of a building that had had to be demolished years ago as it was starting to crumble and said it was on Wigan Lane. I innocently pointed out that it was actually 118 Standishgate, (as my husband used to work in it), and he was nasty about it. I have now left the site and miss contributing my thoughts and reading other people's comments but I'm not being told when I can and can't comment! Facebook itself is often unfair as I was once given a "warning" about a comment I had made, being told that I had "threatened someone"! I was gobsmacked!

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 29th February 2024 at 12:48

Veronica, I and I'm sure many others, would like to see the King Street photo. Wherever your friend got it from, it is hardly likely to be the only one in existence, so it could have come from anywhere. I remember Ron sending in a photo not too long ago that someone claimed was "HIS" photo, but Ron had a legitimate copy that he had purchased himself. Please put it on!

Comment by: Veronica on 29th February 2024 at 13:17

I have posted the photo Irene at your request because I like others to see the photos. But it’s the thought of someone taking a photo when someone else has sourced it. I mean anybody can post a photo if it’s there in front of you.
Scaramouch I have seen photos with the Wigan World mark on them. Not quite sure if the jolly swagman posted them though, he probably has. It’s not too bad if the Wigan World mark is on them. I know David Whelan always credits Wigan World. He seems a nice chap. Even if he speaks ‘Lanky’ awt’time.

Comment by: Veronica on 29th February 2024 at 13:26

Irene he’s a cheeky b—-r telling you when you can comment. He’s not very well informed anyway about anything!
He’s a ‘Top Contributor/ Admin at that!
I posted two of my paintings on- I don’t know what he thought of that. I do have a couple of school mates on there so they were delighted when I posted them. I just commented a “ bit of colour is needed”..;o). I did it on purpose. I got a lot of ‘likes’…
