Brilliant! I love "before-and-after" photos. I think the original photo appeared in "Picture Post" magazine but I can't be certain. Quite a few Scholes photos appeared in that publication.
I remember the old terraced houses I think they were the first to go.
Many memories from those days. Such happy hunting grounds for us kids.
I love these old photos, they bring back, lots of memories.Thank you.
Walking up Hardybutts I was a bit bewildered by the change. I thought Hardybutts ran all the way past the former Black Bull in the distance, now a post office and convenience store but I think the name has changed to St Patrick’s Way?
Hardybutts ran all the way to Birkett Bank Colin from where the Royal George Lodging House was. There’s no through road nowadays. It’s very confusing. It looks desolate these days. The junior school is built where the road led through. Even Patrick St is a street that goes ‘nowhere’ but at least there’s some ‘cobbles’ left where it actually was. It used to be so full of life and activity.
Thanks Veronica, I thought the school had been built on that road but seems to cut off St Patricks Church, perhaps there was a path through that I missed so I walked all along until I got to Darlington Street East and then turned left and walked up until I could get to St Patrick's Church. Pleasing to see that many of those side roads are still cobbled and that St Patricks Church still looks in good shape.
Walking back to Wigan I called in at The Silverwell and got some really interesting shots of the interior (and a light refreshment!) which has changed very little over the years, the entrance lobby floor still has its Victorian tiles and looks amazing.
Glad that I did call in as the brewery are soon the refurbish and modernise, I hope that these pictures feature in the near future.
PS Ron does a brilliant job of merging the old and new pictures for comparison, thanks Ron.
