Thats how I remember it back in the late 1940's Ken.
Very generous of you to post this Ken thank you.
I’m sure somebody will date it for you. I haven’t seen this one before.
Thanks Ken for sharing your postcard.
Does this group of buildings have a collective name?
Rushton’s clearly have business in the building and apart from their building in New Market Street that was a warehouse I don’t really know what they traded in.
Not sure of the date myself but clearly Lowe’s Victoria House had not been extended into the pubs next door and I can make out Saxons Shoe Shop on the ground floor. I think this became Cables Shoe Shop in the 1970’s.
I think it is earlier than the 1940s. There doesn't appear to be the Wigan Corporation bus offices with the 3 sided clock in it, where the conductors paid in their fare takings , These offices were tiled in pale colours and were next to what is the Saxone shop in this shot, and opposite the underground toilets.
If you stand across the road and look closely at these buildings you will notice two slightly different styles, particularly the roofs,
The four buildings on the left were finished in 1905 with the two on the right finished in 1906.
They must have caused a stir at the time being so large and impressive.
