PENDLEBURY'S STORE STANDISHGATE

The layout never seemed to alter. It was the same when Debenham’s went into the Grand Arcade. I used to go in every week without fail. I remember what the ladies uniforms were like in the nineties. They wore bottle green skirts with green and white floral blouses and a cap to complete. Can’t remember what they wore before that. There was always a queue.
It reminds me of The Silver Grill at a David Greig's store in Dartford where you sat on stools round a semi circle counter. It was the 60's & it was very glam & as you say Ron, very posh !
My grandma used to take me there in the early 60s, or the one at Lowes on a Friday morning after we’d been to the market (why people today think they’ve invented the farmer’s market heaven knows!) We had toasted currant teacakes with probably far too much butter - absolutely delicious and coffee, all served on yellow crockery with red polka dots. This photo has brought back such happy memories.
Looks to be the same location as when the store closed, although I don't think it looked as grand as this picture.
The windows at the back would have looked out onto Crompton Street. I think the toilets where on the right behind that panel.
