PENDLEBURY'S STORE STANDISHGATE

There used to be a short cut through near the back of the Ritz that brought you out on Standishgate as well.
Brilliant photo Ron. I can see Timpson's shoe shop too; we had a number of shoe shops in Wigan back then, Timpson's and Freeman, Hardy and Willis being the most popular. When I worked at Debenhams, (formerly Pendlebury's), in 1973 the staff entrance was in Crompton Street, roughly where the little shed is to the right of the photo. We used to "clock in" with the old-fashioned "clocking-in" system which showed the time you had arrived at work, so they knew if you were late! Whilst I was there it change to "signing in" in a book, so maybe the old clock had broken down. But I'm glad I experienced the old system of "clocking in" and of staff calling each other by their title..."Mr" or "Miss" when on the shop floor; I liked the old ways.
Douglas Terrace was opposite Hope Street and the Three Crowns pub on Standishgate, down the left side of the photo to the Douglas Bridge and Crompton Street behind the camera.
Nimans clearly visible on the corner of Mesnes St. and Standishgate - jewellers and also sold high end luggage.
Cracking view of the construction site, BHS and Timpson's in the background and the side ally way through to the market.
For the life of me I cannot remember the Three Crowns Pub, was that on the opposite side of the ally way?
Still cannot locate Douglas Terrace or once was Douglas Terrace. Have put a posting on Douglas Terrace Street Scenes with a few comments on possible location.

The Three Crowns pub was opposite Marks and Spencers There is a photo of it under PUBS
I now think that Douglas Terrace must have been that back road behind the Ritz that eventually ran up to the side of Pendleburys / Debenhams.
For everyone's interest please find time to visit the site of the old Roman remains off Millgate leading into the Grand Arcade rear entrance. You will be fascinated with the display of Wigan street maps dating from the 1800's. I have taken pictures of them all for future reference.
It’s many years since I lived in Wigan Colin but I remember Douglas Terrace was at the side of the river separating the mound with Central Station at the top…then a little further on was the back of the Ritz with the passage that cut through to Standishgate...there is a photo somewhere on here showing how it was.
