You're right Ron....I can almost see Fagin and The Artful Dodger sneaking furtively past....it looks more Victorian then 1950s. What a fascinating photo.

I wonder if that corrugated shelter was stuck there during the war - perhaps not it looks new.
Whatever would anyone be doing on the ladder to the right.

Thanks for the picture, this is a rear view of the picture previously posted with the two buildings and a glimpse of Maltby's along side. The three story building with two windows on each floor is still there.
You just get a peak of BHS through the gap.
Four months old and counting ,
naked but with wrap ,
Wigan now awaits me ,
alive with newborn sap .
My feet they hold a pony ,
for now but fast asleep , but soon they will learn born and bred ,
and hold its soul down deep ..
