Oh yes! It’s all coming back now….I remember the mock Tudor .. what a shame it doesn’t seem to fit in next to the new building. It was lovely and full of character. I remember the side on Crompton St. as well a town full of character then. A place worth going to and spending time there.
Ron, thanks a million for this great picture, although the Georgian style classic design was a bit incongruous with Wigans mock Tudor buildings it was nonetheless a great asset to the town and a huge attraction with its many floors and departments.
I cannot remember what the building alongside in Crompton street was used for at that time. looks like it might have been a pub at one time.
Speaking of pubs, I came across a site on Wiganworld of various pubs around Wigan, one in particular purporting to be looking up Hallgate with very old timber framed buildings on the right hand side and people crowded outside on both sides. For the life of me I cannot locate this. Any chance of putting this up for discussion and comment?
Just for a few seconds I thought that was Dicconson Street....the shop on the corner of Dicconson Street was very similar to the Mock Tudor frontage of Maltby's. Wines and Spirits shops were the place to buy bottles of wine or sherry for Christmas and special occasions back then....who would have thought we would be buying them from supermarkets just to have with a pizza or watching telly any night of the week? I get my make-up from that shop now, on the corner of Standishgate and Crompton Street....next time I go in I will imagine it as it was when it was Maltby's . What a brilliant photo, Ron....please keep them coming.
Ron, further to my pervious contribution, I did find that site with regards to pubs and Hallgate, I have made a contribution. Could you put this up on the main page of recently posted?
Still pulling information together on the Black Bull, Hardybutts and will put something up in due course. Colin.
I can't believe this beautiful building was demolished to be replaced by the tacky building that everyone knows as the 'Game' store. I believe it is now the perfume shop that was previously inside the Galleries.
There was a very similar building on the corner of Standishgate and the original Dicconson Street that was demolished in the 1980s when redevelopment began on building Northway.

CJ The store on the corner which you refer to was at one time Bill Davies, similar stuff to Crank & Burton, there was a really good picture of this somewhere on Wigan World but I cannot locate it, perhaps Ron Hunt can help?
Further along to the left up Dicconson Street was a Dr.Scholl shop and Plumbs (original) TV shop before you reached the Wesleyan School and St Johns Hall. Further along to the right along Standishgate there was a sweet shop at the corner of Brick Kiln Lane. I remember a Arabic style glass bottle of tiny perfumed sweets quite extensive for 2oz, not sure what they where called.
Were they Parma Violet sweets Colin they looked a bit like tablets!
Thanks Veronica, yes I think they were Palma Violets, you were considered quite posh if you bought those.
Just Googled them and they are still available but not in that fancy bottle!
I came across a picture of that corner of Standishgate and Dicconson Street on Wiganworld on my phone, Ref: #30522 along with others. I think I might have made a comment, perhaps Ron could reinstate it on Recently Viewed?
