What a fantastic photo....thankyou! That's just how I remember it.
A very nostalgic photo for me, thank you for posting. At the weekend in the 50’s, it would be a trip to this arcade with my father, to buy a newspaper from Smiths and occasionally sitting down for a weight check on the weighing machine.
A nice change to see this from this entrance so clearly without the crowds. Just how it was full of character…
is that the legs of man ? .
All the legs I can see are women legs.
whups, it is the top entrance to the Legs of Man.
I do remember the Legs o’ Man and the about a corridor to the other end and seeing the weighing machine but nothing else about this arcade.I read what folk put on about shops,Voses pie shop is one and I have never heard of them.It was a treat to go to Wigan on the No3 bus from Hindley but the places I liked going were Woolies, the Wiend,Oliver Somer,Army and Navy and later Kays.I liked best of all the market hall and the fruit and veg and the fish stalls.I must have been in most of the shops mentioned but must have had no interest in them. Some things about the old Wigan are very vivid in my mind but others are very vague
Just how i remember Wigan it's a pity we have to move with time s !!
I think I remember the Triskelion being on glass, perhaps it was the bottom pub.
Peter, if you enlarge the picture you can see it under the window?
Thanks Dave, but I was thinking of it in the stained glass of the windows. Probably my imagination.
Yes, Legs of Man. See Frank Orrell's photo in the WW album:
