My mother and father took over as tenant Landlords of the old Crispin Arms in January 1950, which meant they also paid for the ‘furnishings and fitments’ and amongst them was an identical chair to the one in Ron’s photo. I was led to understand it was referred to as a Captain’s Chair. I know that Norman Bibby, of Clarington Coaches and Haulage, who was a regular customer who would make good use of it, Norman was a big man. He was later Chairman of Wigan RL Club. It’s my understanding that the Crispin was built around the 1880’s but by 1950 it seemed much older than its 70 years or so.
