Ron, according to the information by monumental in this thread the pub was The Black Bull.

I am not sure where abouts this is could anyone please clarify it is not ring ing any bells for me .

Definitely Black Bull, I wasn't sure where the pub was but just read about 100 threads on old Newtown site and it seems it is approximately where the fire station is now. Hope this helps?

I am confused as to where this location is. The route indicator on the Wigan Corporation bus shows PEMBERTON, so is it heading to Pemberton, or is it
heading back to Wigan, and the bus conductor has failed to change the
indicator to WIGAN ?.

Comment by: Dave johnson on 12th June 2023 at 16:30

It is heading towards Pemberton and is roughly where the traffic lights are on the way into wigan outside the ambulance staton?

Dave, Ray you must be a lot younger than me, and a lot of others on here<g> The road you can see on the left, with the lorry, is going towards ASHTON.The road on the right is going towards Pemberton
Dave it's further towards town than the Fire Station. If you look at this image

It's where the woman and the pram is. You can just make out what was SWIFT ST. near the second lamp post

Thank you Ron for the location info. The Wigan Corporation bus will take
the road to the right, the start of Ormskirk Road. Cheers, Ray.

Ron, I am only seventy but I think that just behind the bus is the Saddle inn so I would say it's near where I have described? Not arguing with you and if you're proved right please accept my apologies.

Comment by: Farrie50 on 12th June 2023 at 23:52

I think the pub is the Queens Head and the road to right is Ormskirk Road. For the first 4years of my life i lived next-door but one to the pub,we had 1 room upstairs and 1down

Comment by: Peter Walsh on 13th June 2023 at 07:08

The Saddle Pub was on the left just past the bus and the Queens was on the apex of the junction straight ahead. We always called the stop as The Saddle. Saint Edwards church was on the left as well.

1 lived in Eleanor St, for 35years its the only street still there, and Dave Johnson is definitley right its the Saddle Inn, the front of the bus Is hiding the queens Head in the fork of the road between going to Ashton and the one on the right to pemberton. i think it was on the corner of Swift St and St Edwards Church on the other Corner.

The bus is stopped outside the Saddle pub. If you was upstairs on the bus you could see into the vault. The black bull was almost opposite on the other side of the road.

Comment by: Paul on 14th June 2023 at 07:57

I think the pub (on the site of the old fire station) was called The Black Bull and not The Bull's Head. There are records of it on the census from 1861 to 1939 at 39 Ormskirk Road. It might have changed its name of course but in the 1800s it was called The Black Bull.

Comment by: Paul on 14th June 2023 at 09:17

Sorry, I got my last post the wrong way round - It was the Bull's Head in the 1800s and not the Black Bull. The Black Bull in Pemberton is shown elsewhere on this site and was close to the White Swan. Looks like I've caused more confusion!

Wasn't there an Irish club a bit further up? Was it called The Innis Free or summat?

What a pity such great photos have to be spoiled by the Wiganworld logo. Bad enough having to put up with it on TV with the DOGS (Digital Onscreen Grphics) but even more annoying to realise that my faveourite webpage is now sullied in this way. A "sign" of the times? Sadly- yes.
