IMAGE OF MARYLEBONE HOUSE WHEN IT WAS USED AS A FIRST WORLD WAR HOSPITAL

It was actually called The Mariebonne (owned by the ffaringtons), and was a Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital - known as Woodlands 2. Woodlands 1 was nearby - in The Woodlands (owned by the Crawfords), opposite the Hospital, and Woodlands 3 was at The Beeches (owned by the Almonds) on School Lane, Standish.
Many of the staff were the wives, mothers, sisters and girlfriends of men in the Forces - particularly the 1st/5th Manchesters.
All the local 'great and good' of Wigan seemed to have been involved in one capacity or another.
There's a Report about the Wigan and District Red Cross Division's "War Effort" in the Wigan Archives.
When the flags for Woodlands 2 and 3 were laid up in All Saints a small brass plaque was placed on the wall - it's still there. Similarly, there's a nice tablet on a pillar at St Wilfrid's from when their flags were laid up. Pics of these are in the Album.
As far as I know this is the only image of any of the Wigan Woodlands Hospitals (there were also "Woodlands" Hospitals in Leigh and Southport - it's a popular name for big houses).

Was it on Wigan Lane near to the Cherry Gardens?

A few of the big houses around Marylebone area were used as first world war hospitals and convalescent homes, with the vast amount of casualties I expect they would been well used too.

There are some lovely houses, or should that be mansions at Marylebone, this one came up for sale quite recently - very nice too.

Cyril - I've not heard of any houses other than the Mariebonne and the Woodlands being used as you say. I'd be interested to have further details.

I'll avaroot for the information David, but I'm sure that I've read that The Elms, Brentwood and Douglas Bank House all offered rooms or areas for convalescence. If not on here maybe in the Past Forward magazines.

Hello David, sorry but I can't seem to find what I read before, however it seems that the houses I referred to The Elms and Brentwood were actually maternity nursing homes for mothers and their babies, Brentwood was apparently renamed Park Vale before going back to Brentwood later, not sure about Douglas Bank, though that did become an OAP nursing home much later.

I didn't know that Lord Crawford owned those two houses at Marylebone that became Red Cross hospitals, Haigh Hall was mentioned too, was that also used to house war casualties. I also came across this written by Graham Taylor on the Wigan Local History and Heritage site, you may have contributed to it or have already seen it, but I shall put the link on for anyone who wishes to read it, as it is a very interesting read about local folks involved in WW1.

Cyril - The CRawfoptrd only owned The Woodlands - as I said, the ffarringtons owned The Mariebonne. Haigh Hall gets all the attention for having also been used in WW1 - but it was only briefly, and as a convalescent home.

David, it's just that I got the information from here https://www.geograph.org.uk/article/Auxiliary-Hospitals/10

and the way they are listed with Haigh Hall and the 3 Woodlands Hospitals it appears they are all to do with the Crawford's, though I suppose he would always get a mention with him being or having been an MP. Even on another site it mentions the Crawford's initially before Mrs ffarrington gets a brief mention of being a owner and of course much lower down.

Gibberish comes from the computer - not me! Should read The Crawfords.... I'll just have to double-check before submitting.
Thanks for the link to Graham's article, Cyril.
