These bus shelters were still in use in the early 70s if memory serves.
This must be the Wigan Mining & Technical College as was ?
My mother met my father at a dance there. He was a weaving student. My grandfather, Thomas Bryson was Head of Mining at the college till he retired.
I can remember some bus shelters that were around, but not these, and yes they would be far better in keeping the weather off those queuing and help stop the queue jumpers. Though the vandals would have a field day with all those windows and roofs, they'd be thinking that all their Christmases and birthdays had come.
I remember those shelters, they were handy for the students coming out from night classes.
Painted bottle green if memory serves me right.
Never mind the bus shelters, just look at that amazing building. They don't build them like that anymore, mores the pity, how beautiful is that !
should put one of those outside wigan infirmary it would be a better sleeping area for the homeless
I was a student here 1968-71. The bus shelters were green. If my memory serves me correctly the one on the left was the stop for New Springs (14 & 14 A). The one lower down Library Street was for Bottling Wood (24).
It was indeed a splendid building.
As a student in early 1960's, we had lectures both here, and in the Parson's Walk building.
Library Street building simply had a better 'feel' to it.
I wonder why this was the only place in the town centre where they had bus shelters??? Maybe it was a space thing, as the footpath in that location was quite wide?
The only two shelters like these structures I can remember were out of the town centre, one on the corner of Pool Street and Poolstock near to St James's church and one on Atherton Road opposite St Peter's church Hindley, both were quite long too, possibly to shelter the number of mill workers waiting for buses. There were others around but these were concrete structures.
Ena said, It was indeed a splendid building. Yes it was Ena, but sadly full of dry rot too with lack of maintenance.
We have two of these type of bus shelters in-between the two Bowling Greens at Garswood Hall Bowling Club, Bryn, they will still be standing in 10/20 years time
Anyone remember the car showroom further up the street, going towards where Moon Under Water is now, same side, I think it was a Jaguar Dealership ? or the multi chair Barbers shop facing it, 2/- for a short back and sides.
Bob. The car showroom was Timberlakes who also had premises opposite the Tech.
Bob - the barbers was Crook and Edmondsons.
Re Dr Keith Tattums comment. I think I canremember catching the News Springs bus from the top of Library St. However it was a long time ago.
There was a green iron bus shelter outside what was Hunters Chemist (now Sherringtons) where Walkden Ave East meets Mesnes rd.
I can remember buses too,we get one on hour if lucky.
