I BET NOT MANY OF TODAY'S YOUNGSTERS HAVE SEEN THESE BEFORE.. I CAN REMEMBER GOING INTO THE FIELDS, WHICH WERE FULL OF THESE, AND MAKING LITTLE 'TENTS' OUT OF THEM.. PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN EARLY 1950'S IN THE ORRELL / KITT GREEN. AREA.

So much easier on the eye than the plastic wrapped bales of hay.
Many a pub called the Wheatsheaf, there’s one near me - must go back in time to all the lovely fields surrounding the area. So much land now being used for housing.

I remember when we lived at Holland Moor there was a field behind the house & at harvest time we kids would go & help with standing the sheaves into what was called a stook, 3 sheaves made a stook. If we were lucky we got a ride on the horse drawn wagon. To my knowledge no one ever came to any harm...I think we knew what would hurt us in those days so we steered clear of it.
