As the station was built in 1845 I wonder if those small windows were toilets inside. Just guessing...mind you it was only seven years later when the other station was built.
Beg pardon it was 1848 not 1845 when thecstation wasn't built.
The chap who invented predictive text died last Friday its his Funfair next Friday.
Veronica: This must have been a(Branch) line.
Sorry I couldn’t resist.
Well it's certainly living up to its name John G

There has actually been THREE L&Y stations built to serve Wigan Wallgate over the years.
These were...
1, Wigan L&YR Station (first site)...
This station was located to the south east side of Wallgate with platforms built on the up & down sides of the lines between Wallgate & the junction with the WCML, it was opened 20/11/1848 & closed on 26/05/1860 being superseded & replaced with a new & larger L&YR station that was built on a second site north west of Wallgate... (yours is a photo of some of the surviving remains of the second site L&Y station).
2, Wigan L&YR Station (Second site)... This larger station was built with longer platforms on the up & down sides of the line on the north side of Wallgate, & was located between Wallgate & the bridge under the WCML, it was opened on 26/05/1860 & closed on 02/02/1896 being superseded & replaced by a larger station, which is the Wigan Wallgate station that we have to this present day with it's island & bay platform configuration.
3, Wigan Wallgate Station, opened 02/02/1896 & still open to present day.
(Info from the disused stations website database).
A ex-train driver who worked on the Wigan line told me that the when Wallgate station was refurbished, it was built the wrong way round i.e. the cafe was meant to be at the bottom of the steps. This can be confirmed by the fact that the platform numbers are the wrong way round i.e. all the the stations have No.1 going into Manchester and No.2 coming out whereas Wigan is the otherway round (apparently there was no indication on the plans which way round the new station was supposed to be).
