Nothing changed much since then. The council offices are now flats I think.
Got my first mortgage from there in 1973
Ron. This would be after having taken a very acute right hand bend, and opposite the Parish Church.
Albert S,
Just coming off the bend and heading towards the Dover / Golborne end of the village.
Like John, we too got our first mortgage from there when we got married, in 1974. I remember paying the rates there too. Next door is what we still know as the "Top Shop" in Abram and there was a chippy next door to the shop, (where the parked car is), that was known as "Ping's" when my children were growing up. The view is very much the same today.
I can remember walking to here about 1960 with a group of friends from Manchester Road,Ince. We would all have been 9 or 10.x
Triumph 1300, Ford Escort and a Wales & Edwards three wheel milk float.
On V.E night. With an ecstatic singing crowd, I was eleven years of age, and we all walked from Spring View to Abram, and back to the View. What a night, Although utter darkness, the streets were lit up with Bon fires. Everyone was linking arms with each other. Railway Tavern, and other pubs had rolled a barrel of beer or two, onto the street.
Folk had put tables onto the pavement, with plates of sandwiches, a real night to remember.
The chip shop was run by John and Winnie Keeling for many years prior to Ping.
One more, of many other things that I didn’t mention. Household were carrying pianos, and all kinds of other instruments into the street. Music galore, the older ones, dancing, and jitter bugging away. Never will forget it.
I worked at Harbens together with Bill Topping, his parents had the Off Licence adjacent to the Council Office !
Remember standing in front of the council offices as a little lad eating a bag of chips more or less opposite the maypole memorial, it was late and gone dark, when a black cat that I'd not noticed right away, that was sat on the church yard wall opened its eye's and glared at me, with green eyes, needless to say scared the life out of me i dropped my chips and peddled off on my tomahawk, always reminds me when i see this picture.
