Ron. Is that an advertisement for Ted Gallagher’s pickles. Their business was situated at the bottom of Belle Green Lane, Higher Ince.
I don’t think they had a business premises in Greenough Street.

Comment by: Albert.S. on 24th October 2021 at 10:56

Looking at the advertisement again. Is at the end of the stand at Central Park?.

Comment by: Veronica on 24th October 2021 at 11:15

Looking at the crowd of people there I'm reminded of getting my head stuck in the railings as a little 'un. The noise of the river flowing was really loud in those days. My screaming couldn't be heard! Still I survived...

Comment by: gibo on 24th October 2021 at 18:34

I remember being stood by the bridge as a boy on match days waiting for Billy B. to arrive .

Comment by: Cyril on 24th October 2021 at 20:25

That could be seen as a form of torture Veronica, having to endure smelling the foetid aroma coming from the river at that time, and no wonder when you think of all the things that was drained, thrown or poured into it - raw sewage, waste chemicals, animal waste from slaughter houses and probably a lot more other substances too.

Is that a rickety wooden bridge between the river banks further up?
I think I would have walked up to Greenhough Street and crossed the road bridge than risk crossing over that.

Comment by: Veronica on 24th October 2021 at 21:56

One of life's lessons Cyril - I didn't do it again. I still only remember the roar of the water.

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 25th October 2021 at 09:38

See, we did have floods back then, despite what the climate change fanatics would have you believe.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 25th October 2021 at 12:15

The fact that a dam system for holding the water back upstream of this point was built in recent years is evidence that flooding from the Douglas has been a long-standing problem for the town - and there are plenty of historic images of Wigan in flood downstream of here. No one is saying flooding never happened in the past - what the evidence shows, however, is that severe flooding is happening far more frequently than in the past. You can believe that the gods have suddenly become incontinent, if you like - or you can believe the science.

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 26th October 2021 at 08:56

Rev Long, we are constantly being bombarded these days with the info that this, that, or the other "weather event" is the hottest, coldest, wettest, windiest, driest, whateverist "since records began". It is all part of the climate change fanatics agenda to try and panic us all into believing their so called climate emergency cult. No such "emergency" exists.

Comment by: AH on 26th October 2021 at 09:47

I,m with you on this chris; climate change a natural phenomenon

Comment by: Rev David Long on 26th October 2021 at 10:43

So the cult is hoodwinking the leaders of the world to waste their time at the Cop26 at Glasgow next week? I think, if they could, those leaders would far rather stay at home - but the science tells them that something must be done. I'm sure they won't agree to do everything that should be done to stop us destroying our children's world - but I hope they'll do something.
Changes in our climate are natural - but they usually take centuries to occur. What is happening to our world now is not natural - it's happening far too quickly, and accelerating.

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 26th October 2021 at 11:27

AH, millions of people think the same as us, but their voices are never heard. It is just the noisy fanatics that are heard and listened to. Trouble is, the govt and media think that these people represent the majority and so are totally in league with them in promoting their false causes.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 26th October 2021 at 12:11

What do you mean 'their voices are never heard'? One of you used to be President of the United States. We certainly heard more than enough from him as he hampered moves to reduce harmful emissions etc.
Folk who believe the science and think that global warming is man-made and to some extent reversible, actually are the majority.

Comment by: AH on 26th October 2021 at 15:15

not in china ,russia & india ; former US President could possibly be right

Comment by: Rev David Long on 26th October 2021 at 15:47

Well. yes, I suppose he could be right. Just as he is about still being the President of the USA.

Comment by: Philip C on 26th October 2021 at 21:25

I find it concerning that often seemingly intelligent people choose to go down the conspiracy theory route for several problems facing the world.
Rev David Long is quite right about the speed of climate change. The climate has always changed we will have another ice age
You don’t have to read any news reports to notice the changes. People need to open their eyes.
Although WW is essentially about Wigan the outcomes will affect the town.

Comment by: Scaramouche on 26th October 2021 at 22:48

Chris S. I bet you believe that, the earth is flat, men never landed on the moon, and that Covid is a lie...

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 27th October 2021 at 08:44

Scaramouche, you are correct. I was Chris Columbus in a previous life, then I was Neil Armstrong, now I am me and Covid is a Chinese conspiracy.

Comment by: Albert. S. on 27th October 2021 at 09:32

There are so many diverse opinions relating to climate charge that it may be that no one gets the right solution, and it becomes six of one, and half a dozen of the other. Therefore we just sink,
or swim.

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 27th October 2021 at 11:08

Albert.S. exactly. But the climate change fanatics don't want to listen to any other view than their own. They think that they are the only ones with an opinion that counts, dismiss everybody who disagrees by calling them 'flatearthers' etc as I have been called above by Scaramouche and keep repeating the mantra, "the science is settled, follow the science". Arrogant is another word for them.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 27th October 2021 at 11:25

Albert, there may be diverse opinions - but there is only one science, and the science says that our climate has been changed by the actions of its human inhabitants, and that we must change our behaviours now if we are not to leave our grandchildren with an uncontrollable situation. The latest UN report indicates that, sadly, too many vested interests are preventing countries taking the necessary actions.

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 27th October 2021 at 12:01

Rev Long, it isn't science. It is pseudo science, all based on computer modelling fed by biased stats from only the last 200 years or so.

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 27th October 2021 at 12:40

Rev Long, you sound like you are preaching from your pulpit.
"there is only one science"
Substitute God instead of science, and you see why the climate con trick is referred to as a cult.

Comment by: Albert.S. on 27th October 2021 at 16:43

After at least a century, and at a massive rate of pumping C.O.2 into the atmosphere, the tinkering about by individual countries, and especially small industrial nations’, in my humble opinion, it be no where near enough to rectify matters. If in fact matters can be rectified.
Other countries that are massively much larger will have to come on board. The cost will most likely go into trillions, and trillions, of currencies, finances that very few countries possess.
What the final conclusive result will be to whole dilemma, only God has that answer.

Comment by: Chris Southworth on 27th October 2021 at 22:16

Don't worry Albert.S.
Nothing will come of it. It is all scaremongering.
However, a lot of vested interests in stirring up the panic will make a vast amount of money out of it all as usual.
We, the common herd will, of course, as usual, be the ones to suffer and pay for it.

Comment by: Philip C on 27th October 2021 at 23:46

A lot more could be said in reply to people who cannot see what is in front of them. Rapid climate change has been caused by us. However I do not think that this site is the place.

Comment by: Albert.S. on 4th November 2021 at 09:56

Has the flooding by the River Douglas now been cured. If so, how was it achieved?, seeing that in the present climate the rivers’ are more likely to cause more severe flooding.
