I watched a very good documentary on the box a few weeks ago about Bert Trautmann. How he carried on playing football with a broken neck. I was very impressed how he adjusted to living in this country after the War and being a prisoner. I had every sympathy with him. He was an ordinary German soldier like our own who had to serve his country. He also put up with a lot animosity because he was German...which I suppose was only what could be expected at first.....
Older Latics fans will remember the other goalkeeper, Wilf Birkett.
Ron, you must have a huge collection of photographs by now and I'm wondering how you keep track of them all. Do you have some sort of filing system?
I only ask because I have a lot of photos myself, but they are all over the place and, whenever I'm looking for something in particular I have to plow through them and hope that I come across the item early on.
Although i didn,t watch the game i remember it, Wilf Birket lived half a mile from me & Ronnie Birket lived next door but one,Wilf went on to play for Everton but his brother Ronnie only made it to a low Div club, Racking my brain to think of it,
