Where in Ince was this Ron?

Comment by: Albert.S. on 26th May 2021 at 09:14

Was this in Higher Ince, or Lower Ince Ron?.

The Lodge to Westwood House is still standing - at the right-hand bend to Westwood Lane. Not to be confused with the much older Westwood Hall, still standing, further down the lane.

Would it have been down Westwood Lane past where Westwood Cemetery now is?

Did either of these mentioned buildings, become, in past years, St Mary’s Rectory?.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 29th May 2021 at 22:40

John - yes - just a bit further down from the cemetery. Albert - no - St Mary's never was a Rectory - that title was reserved for Parishes where the date of their foundations was lost in the mists of time - such as Wigan, Winwick, Warrington, etc. The new, largely 19th century, parishes carved out of their areas had Vicars - who lived in Vicarages.
St Mary's had a Vicarage on Westwood Lane - and Christ Church had two - one on the site of the present cemetery, and, later, one on the other end of the same row of Victorian semis as St Mary's.
