Drawing of the war memorial from inside the booklet
The drawing is of Giles Gilbert Scott's original design for the Memorial. At the time the plan was not to have the names of the fallen inscribed on the Memorial, but for them to be inscribed on vellum and deposited for inspection in the Public Library. This was soon changed, and the names were on stone tablets arranged around the octagon. They soon showed signs of erosion, and were replaced by cast bonze plaques, at £8 each, in 1930.
