Definitely stood the test of time - and what is missing ?...the chimney pots -probably in the back gardens containing plants!

I just love then and now.
This is the Orthodontics dental centre, on New Market Street.
Banksy well done.

Comment by: Garry on 13th December 2016 at 18:11

OMG I'd have done well on my coal round up there, every room looks like it had a fireplace.

Comment by: Vb on 13th December 2016 at 18:13

Should have said the chimney stacks ....that would have been big jobs moving them!,,

Great photos. Love to see the old chimney pots, they add character to the buildings.

That tree on the corner as seen the world go by for over a century. If only trees could talk.

Comment by: Carl on 13th December 2016 at 19:26

the tree on the picture is well over 100 years old.

Comment by: Vb on 13th December 2016 at 20:06

I remember a lot more trees around here -same with Wigan Lane - the council must have cut them down years ago.

Think your getting confused Garry New Market street is near the Tech

Comment by: Tony on 14th December 2016 at 10:38

I never thought I'd say this, but Garry is right (for once).
The dental surgery's address is 50 New Market St.
New Market St runs from its junction with Frog Lane to the junction of Dicconson St and Upper Dicconson St.

Vb you are right about the trees. I think it was because of Dutch Elm disease.

Comment by: Vb on 14th December 2016 at 13:41

Oh well the council can't be blamed for that Jack...those trees certainly set the scene though. I have a photograph taken in the area one Whit Monday about 1962/3.

I stand corrected Tony, ive only lived in Wigan for 50 years, didnt realise it was such a long street 😊 I noticed this morning walking past it on my way to work

Comment by: Garry on 15th December 2016 at 18:24

No, I'm not wrong Karen.

Comment by: Alan on 15th December 2016 at 21:21

I think Karen should be saying that to Gary and not Tony.

I remember along the row of houses on the right was the Conservative Club. I'm talking about 25 yrs ago -there used to be some really good local singers in there on a Sunday night with someone playing the piano. Don't know whether it is still there.

Comment by: Mick on 18th December 2016 at 19:34

VB - what used to be the Conservative Club is now the Fat Olive restaurant.

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it somehow ....thanks Mick.
