AW no idea could have been part of the Annual Walking Day? I have never heard of a "Nursing Establishment" in Upholland Maybe they were from Billinge Hospital.?????

If it was at the time of World War One, there were many different voluntary nursing organisations.
Quite possibly part of a procession going to the Abbey Lakes Pleasure Grounds for a rally, or fund raising event.
The shadows indicate the pic was taken late afternoon/early evening.
