200 year old pub demolished to make way for MARKETGATE!!!!
by our council any other DECENT town would have saved this piece of history.

Ron. Is the pedestrian crossing the one with Woolworth's on the opposite side?.

Comment by: Jonno on 13th November 2015 at 13:35

Yes Albert, the pub was just short of Halfords shop a couple of doors higher up, so more or less opposite Woolworths.

The pub was opposite Marks and Spencers check out the STANDISHGATE pics and you will see a side on view of the pub. It was next to the alley way which led to the Market Hall

An ancestor of mine fell from a window there and was killed in 1804.

Ron, thanks for giving the heads up on this pub.
Before it was demolished the ground floor was converted into two shops, Peter Hamilton to the left and Freeman Hardy and Willis to the left. As you say Ron a real sad loss.

PS. Sorry to contradict but it was demolished to make way for the Standishgate main entrance to The Galleries not the Market Gate which was in the Market Place.
