The subject of this pic was the first boat to come down the Wigan flight after an extended winter stoppage - for lock gate repairs and the upgrading of the towpath below Britannia Bridge. I think this was just before Easter, 1997. The first boat was the Leeds & Liverpool preserved short boat KENNET.
Perhaps of more historical interest now is the background - where the scaffolding around the tower of the former Empress Mill heralds its imminent demolition.

The tower with the scaffolding was not demolished, it is in fact being refurbished in the photograph and still stands today. Adjacent to it is another tower that hides a mobile telephone mast.

Reverent. Is that Manchester Road, Higher Ince, in the background?

Comment by: Garry on 3rd September 2014 at 16:25

Yes it is Albert, and it's Reverend...thats how you spell it.

Garry. I concede that I inadvertently put a "t" where the "d" should have been, and I thank you for bringing it to my attention. Like wise, I should point out to you, relative to the second comment, made by your good self, under the photograph of St Peter's, Hindley. It is trolley buses, not trolly buses.

Albert and Garry... no it is not Manchester Road, that is further up and around the corner. The terrace you can see is the end of Forge Street. I do love it when a member of the spelling police picks somebody up for a simple typo... only fer they themselves to have real spelling mistakes they have made pointed out!

Reminds me of home and the wonderful Ganges but not as clean.

Ok lads, you win, Sorry. I was just trying to help!

Comment by: Garry on 4th September 2014 at 20:53

Yip straight up you come to Manchester rd, Abert.

Comment by: Rev David Long on 6th September 2014 at 09:14

You're right, Dennis - the tower was not fully demolished. However, it could hardly be described as a tower now, with its reduced height and pitched industrial roof.

Comment by: Kenny on 9th September 2014 at 20:52

The end of Forge Street which meets the Canal Terrace was once named Broomfield Terrace, well it was in 1908. Presumably when the sizeable gap between them was infilled with houses I assume the name changed.

Comment by: Kenny on 9th September 2014 at 22:19

Despite being Forge Street, the nameplate is still evident as Broomfield Terrace (about 20 houses), a wall plaque with its name again, gives the date of its construction as 1897 - wonder why the name was "changed"?
