A trip to Blackpool must have been a real treat during the dark days of the war.
A.W. The train journey from Wigan to Blackpool took an extremely long time. The train kept on stopping for long periods of time, probably because of the movement of troop trains.
Although it was July, the weather was particularly wet. I was, with other members' of my family, one evening travelling along the sea front, in a landau. Three sailors' were walking along on the sea side of the promenade, and it was pouring down. One of my aunt's, said "look at those poor sailors' getting soaked through" Another aunt piped up "They are used to this weather, they will be enjoying it". I was only a young lad, but I thought "I doubt it".
Half way through the week, the people in the rooms below us had to vacate their rooms prematurely. They were needed to accommodate Canadian soldiers.
Fortunately the nights were light, as there were no lights of any sort, during darkness.
