I remember the memorial well.Does anyone know when the fountain disappeared. The ironwork at the side of the steps I presume went to the war effort.

I heard that someone drowned in the water around the pond and it was filled in around c.1910
Is that 'aitch' in his pram?

The South African soldier is on his plinth and the brickwork on the café is the same as the recent P-a-day that somebody said looked like that they had run out of bricks.

Dave Marsh: Have a look at Tom Walsh`s 20th June`13 Photo-a-Day. He states that the original fountain was removed in 1921.

One evening, a sailor, who had,had one,or two too many, smashed the arm off the statue of the soldier, who was holding a flag aloft. The sailor's excuse to the magistrates' for doing it, was. "He looked as though he was fed up of holding it up" I forget what year it was, but it was many years ago.
