My Uncle Cliff, who had a farm near Bridgwater, Somerset, is to the right of me (can just see his face). People born in Somerset have some quaint expressions. When they arrive after a journey, they don`t say - as we do - "Here we are," - they say "Here we be."
There are some wonderful expressions/sayings throughout our country. When visiting Beamish museum, I was called "hinny" several times. Visit Bristol & you can be taken unawares by the "l" added to a word that ends in a vowel - It was decided that it was a good "ideal" to go there. "She is singing in an oratorial next week"
Nothing beats the old Lancashire accent. In the late seventies I travelled up from Kent, where I had lived for the previous twelve years. I was born, and bred in Wigan. I was on the outskirts of Wigan, and I was looking for a particular hotel. I saw a man, about sixty years of age, walking along the pavement. I asked my fourteen year old son to go and ask him for direction. When my son came back, he was none the wiser. he said. "The man said.Go daint thill,un turn reet, turn fust reet,un it's on thi reet. Caunt miss it."(Wonderful)
If I'm not mistaken,I recognise Edith and Dick Cheetham on the far right of the picture. They lived at Boars Head next to the old post office.
