What a peculiar arrangement of the rainwater goods: to have that guttering on the gable end crossing in front of the window!
I thought that when I coloured it!
Perhaps for a rainwater butt or tank, at the rear of the building - waste not want not.
Even when this photo was taken many small communities like Roby Mill often had problems with a mains water supply.
Thats showing of George.. lol!! great stuff.. ille try to learn how its done. fantastic job...!
They could at least have put it over the top of the window out of sight??
Over the top of the window would have meant the water would have had to flow uphill. I suspect as has been said it was directed at a water butt, and they weren't that bothered about the aesthetics then. Probably a window no-one looked out of, so this was the most direct route.
great work george, i thought that about the gutter,
was in two minds to delete it or not,the gates must
have been council green they all were lol
Ah, but there would have been no 'fall' in the angle of the gutter then Dave, to allow water to run from the front to the back!
It needed to be fitted to the front guttering at a very slight sloping angle.
Hi all.. can either Tony or George put some snow on the roof . and ground.. pls.. its starting to be a photo shop fight.. luv it.. lol..great work guys..!!
Has't had a sprit level on it Mick? The mind boggles at your comments
Meaning what, Art?
My father in law says they had a gutter like this on his house in Coppull before the war, it ran into a barrell at the back for water for his dads garden.
There are some recently built houses, on the back road, into St Anne's on Sea. They have guttering, that crosses in front of the bedroom windows. I have no idea, why.
The window problem could have been solved by putting in a vertical down spout to just below the window level and then running across the building. But we don't see the whole situation, there could be a variety of reasons.
We had a gutter like that running below an attic window in the gable end to a rain butt in the back garden. My dad used to risk breaking his neck, hanging out of the window to rake it out with a garden hoe tied on to a brush steel.
Raise the roof and have a hoe down hey? I would have requested Jambalaya for the music: could then have the actions to -"go pole a pirogue down the bayou!"
