Must be after 1989 as construction of the clock tower on Wigan Pier/Orwell, visible on the photo, was only started in the autumn of that year.
Eckersley's Mill, at the corner of Swan Meadow Road, unless I miss my guess, Cathy.
The cottages on the right before the bridge were attached to the Stables. My grandfather was the Hostler for the canal company, and lived there and brought up 9 children there ,including my mother ,born 1908,
Eckersley's Swan Meadow Mills. When this photo was taken, the chimney had already had a few feet taken off the top. It is now even shorter.
Cath,I think that is one of Eckersley`s Mill chimneys.
Vulcanite works, Pottery road.
Cathy this is a lovely photo, would it be ok to take a copy for my album....cheers, Lizzie.
Thank you all for your comments.
This picture came from the Lancashire Magazine November/December 1995 to illustrate an article called 'Time warp Wigan' and was labelled 'Wigan Pier' which it clearly is not! The pictures of the Makinson and Royal arcades were from the same article. I think this picture was taken from the little bridge next to the lock. I still don't remember that chimney though. I must have driven past it hundreds of times.
Lizzie you are very welcome to take a copy. Are you an exiled Wiganer?
Could it be Taylors Carpet Factory, Miry Lane?
