This has been on already this year
Has anyone managed to date it in its previous appearances then?
It may well have been dated wherever it was lifted from. Another reason for acknowledging where you 'find' stuff you upload here.
It looks as if there are trams on Wallgate - they went in 1931 - so it probably predates that.
Don't know what year Central station Had its 2nd platform & roof removed, But if You look closely it is still there on the photo.
Looks very grim
This aerial photo is dated August 1920 from the Britain From Above web site. Here are the details of the photo.
Title Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western Railways Stations, Wigan, 1920
Image reference EPW005026
Date August 1920.
Good photo, thanks for posting.
Is it grim? I see no back to backs, which would be apparent on many similar shots of industrial towns. Thanks Joseph for researching and supplying the date. Pity can't see more railway detail, as would be pre-grouping.
Here is the previous posting, with dates:

This photo means so much to lots of old timers like myself.I can actually wander around the streets I knew so well.I can see us playing in the schoolyard at St.Thomas's and many other familiar buildings.Back to backs were rare in Wigan and most of us had a little backyard to keep a few hens or pigeons.
This shot means the world to me..I can seenthe house I was brought up in,and my childhood was wonderful..all that were missing was greenery, but there was of time for that later on..I have seen this photo before but it still gives me a thrill to see it.
Please excuse wording, this new tablet has the odd hiccough.
I am guessing that this portrays Wigan at the peak of its prosperity (Though hard times being just around the corner),unless, of course, anyone knows differently.
I have enlarged thisphot; ain't bad. The station I can gather has 3 trains waiting to pull north? The old platforms being: 1, 5, and 10; though in 1920 they would have been numbered different. Any comments?
Tony: sounds interesting, how did you enlarge? Can you post your enlargement for us all to see?
Yes, in the Pixton book, 'Main Line Railways around Wigan', there is a plan of the pre-war station: the bays and through platforms are each numbered in their own separate sequences. ie there is a Bay 1, a platform 1, and so on.
Hello AP, Ijust saved apic. Went to my pics.and zoomed in!
The platform numbers are interesting. Prior to British Rail: they were only 1 to 5!! Following BR in 1947, the station had 10 platforms!!!!
